Computer
Labs
The TLC has
four computer labs with a variety of options available for faculty and
students including walk-in labs and labs that can be reserved for classes.
The computer labs on the Livonia campus are located in the Technology
Learning Center, Room 1104. For assistance call Patricia Kos at
734-432-5323, or email requests for lab reservations to
pkos@madonna.edu. The Downriver Center, Orchard Lake Center, and
SWEEP house computer labs for faculty and students.
Computer Lab Policies
-
Use of the
Technology Learning Center Labs and other campus center labs is limited
to Madonna University students, faculty, staff and alumni (persons
holding a valid Madonna University Alumni Association card will be
granted access on a space-available basis). Consortium students may use
the facility for course work currently being pursued at Madonna
University with a current Madonna University ID. You must show a
Madonna University ID, updated with the current semester’s sticker, in
order to use lab facilities. Student ID cards can be updated with the
current semester sticker in the Student Services Office, Room 1001 or at
the front desk in the computer lab (Room 1104) by showing a class
confirmation slip along with your student ID card.
-
We appreciate your
cooperation by not consuming any food or beverages while in the computer
lab. Please leave all food and beverages on the table located at the
entrance of the lab.
-
Questions regarding
software or hardware should be directed to an on-duty Lab Assistant.
On-duty lab assistants will be wearing blue vests.
-
Lab Assistants are
not allowed to do your homework for you! Contact your instructor if you
have questions regarding your assignments.
-
We asked that all
cell phones and beepers be turned off or placed on vibrate mode upon
entering the computer lab. In order to create an atmosphere that is
conducive to learning for all students, we ask that you conduct any
phone conversations outside of the computer lab.
-
For your convenience
wireless access is available in the computer lab. No personal laptop
computers may be attached to any printer or other peripheral in the lab.
-
You will need a copy
card to print in the labs. Black and white copies are 8˘ per page and
color copies are 75˘ per page. Copy cards are available at card
dispensers located in the Library and just outside the Computer Lab.
Please be advised that lab assistants will not be able to make change or
accept money for copies.
-
The color printer is
located in Lab 1. In order not to disturb a class that may be in
session in Lab 1 you may not access the color printer while that class
is in session. You may send your print job to the color printer but
will have to wait until the class is over before you can pick up the
class session.
-
Only paper supplied
by the Technology Learning Center is to be used in the laser printers.
If a printer needs paper, please see a lab assistant and they will be
happy to re-load the printers for you.
-
The computer lab is
participating in the University’s paper recycling program. You may
deposit any unused sheets of paper in the recycling box located
underneath each printer.
-
According to
University policy children are not allowed in any Academic area,
including the computer labs.
-
Internet Access is
intended for educational use only. Accessing and displaying offensive,
including obscene or pornographic material, and the use of offensive
language are expressly forbidden in the Madonna University Technology
Learning Center (computer lab). Offenders will be subject to loss of
privileges and other disciplinary actions by the Vice President for
Student Services. Behavioral misconduct and its consequences are
described in the Madonna University Student Handbook.
Once you've entered the lab:
-
Sign in at the front
desk and give the Lab Assistant your valid Madonna University ID. You
will receive a computer card with a number on it. Find the computer
which has the matching number. The computers are numbered on their
monitors.
-
The computer will be
turned on and logged on to the network. If the computer is not turned
on or if you need assistance accessing the network menu please ask a lab
assistant for help. Lab Assistants will be wearing blue vests with
their name tags on the front.
Data Disks
Make sure that you bring
your own data disk so you can save your work. A USB Flash drive is
recommended for storage. The computer lab can accommodate 3.5” High Density
disks (1.44mb), 250mb Zip disks; most computers in the computer lab can also
create CD-R/CD-RW. Additionally, a few of the Macintosh computers are
capable of creating DVD-R/DV-RW.
Save your work to a
floppy drive and SAVE frequently. Another suggestion would be to email your
presentation materials to yourself as a backup. The use of two back-up
disks for valuable work is strongly recommended. Please remember to close
ALL applications before ejecting your disk. If an application is still open
when you eject your disk, you may corrupt or lose the files on your disk.
Any unauthorized
duplication of copyrighted material is strictly forbidden in any Madonna
University’ computer labs or classrooms. Students are not permitted to
create CDs or DVDs from any online file sharing services such as Kazaa or
Napster.
Student
E-Mail
All registered students
have an email account on acs.madonna.edu. This email account can be accessed
through our main web at
www.madonna.edu under the
students tab.
Students wishing to use their personal account (e.g.: You may already have
an account with America Online and choose to use that instead of Madonna's
UNIX mail account), may do so unless instructed by their Professor (e.g.:
all Computer Science students will need a UNIX account to use the UNIX
FORTRAN and C compilers). However, email that is sent to students from
Admissions, Student Life, and other departments will be sent to your Madonna
email account due to the complexity of keeping track of what account a
student may or may not have on other ISPs.
Computer
Availability
The Technology Learning
Center does not guarantee unlimited or immediate access to the computers.
Generally, there will be enough computers available to accommodate the needs
of walk-in users. However, during peak usage periods (around midterms,
finals, or due to class reservations), students who have been working in the
lab for an hour or more may be asked relinquish their computer for an hour
or more to accommodate new walk-in students.
Available Software
There are some software
packages that have limited number of copies available. One hour reservations
may be made for this software. Please check with a Lab Assistant for
details.
