Madonna University Athletics has announced
tonight that they will no longer be known as the
Crusaders beginning in 2010-11. The University
has had the nickname since the inception of its
athletic program in 1987 but has decided it is
time for a change.

The Madonna University Athletic Department
presented 24 honors at the second annual Blue
and Gold Awards, held Sunday at St. Mary’s
Cultural Center to recognize athletic and
academic performance during the 2007-08 year.
With co-winners in some categories, a total of
five teams and 18 individuals were recognized in
front of a record crowd of over 400 people.

to a Madonna student athlete, this time
Sheryl Jager, a sophomore women’s basketball

Baseball Season Ends In Regional At Huntington
The Madonna baseball team took on the host
Huntington Foresters in an elimination game
Friday night at the 2008 NAIA Region VIII
Championship and fell by a final of 7-1. MU ends
the season at 37-14 after capturing both the
Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference regular
season and tournament championships and
advancing to the Region VIII playoffs for the
fifth straight season. MU’s 37 wins are the most
since the 2005 squad posted 40 triumphs.

Ends with 5-1 Loss in Championship
For
the second straight season the MU softball team
saw its season end at the hands of Bethel
College (Ind.) with a 5-1 loss in the NAIA
Region VIII championship game Thursday afternoon.
MU advanced to the title round with a 5-0 win
over Indiana Tech early in the day.

LaMilza's Heroics Trumped By Bethel In Loss
The
MU softball team fell into the losers bracket
after a 5-3 eight-inning loss to top-seeded
Bethel College on day two of the NAIA Region
VIII softball tournament. Tara LaMilza hit
a three-run home run to give MU the lead in the
top of the eighth before Bethel scored five
times, including a walk-off grand slam in the
bottom of the inning to win. The rest of
day two was rained out and will resume on

VIII Championship with a 6-1 win over Indiana
Tech on Tuesday. Jess Irwin went the

17 hits and a pair of Kevin Zerbo home runs in

Crusaders Roll to First Day Victories
The
top-seeded MU softball team rolled to a 8-0
(five inning) run-rule victory over fourth seeded
UM-Dearborn in the opening round of the 2008
WHAC Softball Tournament at University Field. MU
then took its second round game over Indiana
Tech 4-0. The Crusaders now await the winner of
Indiana Tech and Aquinas at 2pm tomorrow in the
WHAC finals.

was named WHAC Pitcher of the Year and junior 1B
Kevin Zerbo was named Co-Player of the Year as
the 2008 All-Conference selections were released
by the league today. In all, six Crusaders
earned first team honors.

The Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference office
released the 2008 softball awards late Tuesday
night on the eve of the WHAC softball tournament
and eight different Crusaders took home
hardware, led by Pitcher of the Year Jess
Irwin and Coach of the Year Al White.
The awards were voted upon by the league’s
coaches.

Madonna softball team wrapped up the regular
season with a pair of run-rule wins over
Cornerstone on Monday at University Field. MU
took game one 8-0 in five innings and picked up
WHAC win number 20 in the night cap 12-0, also
in five innings. Jess Irwin threw a one-hitter
in game one, while Cat Sidor (pictured) extended
her hitting streak to 29 games with three hits
on the day.

regional finish ever - at the NAIA Region VIII
