The Madonna women's
soccer team dropped a tough 2-0 match against NCAA Division I University of
Detroit at Greenmead Field.
Detroit
started the scoring early in the game , notching its first goal less than five
minutes into the contest. The shot came from about 25 yards out and tucked
inside the top right corner of the Madonna net.
Following the goal, both teams settled in and the match
was fairly even throughout the remainder of the half with neither team able to
register another goal.
The second half started with Madonna carrying the play for
much of the first 30 minutes. The Crusaders nearly connected when Sarah
Rokuski took a ball near the right edge of the 18-yard box and slammed it
off the post, narrowly missing the equalizer in the game's 51st minute.
Madonna notched two more scoring chances before Detroit
gained control of play and scored its second goal. On what seemed like an
innocent play, the ball squirted loose from Madonna goal keeper Brittany
Warner and landed on the foot of a Detroit forward who dribbled it in for
the tally.
Madonna was unable to get anything past the Detroit
netminder despite putting five shots on frame.
The Crusaders dropped to 2-2 on the year and will take a
few days off before starting Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play
September 12 when they travel to defending league champion Aquinas College.
