BOX SCORE

LIVONIA, Mich. - - The Madonna women's soccer team opened its 2008 home slate with a dramatic 1-0 win over No. 17 Houghton College on Tuesday at Greenmead Field. The win improves the Crusaders to 2-1-0 on the season, while the Highlanders open the season at 0-1-0.

The first 45 minutes was played mostly in the midfield with just two shots being registered - neither on goal - both by Houghton.

The second half saw the offense pick up as MU's Brit Warner was tested in the 48th minute but made a scoop save to keep HC off the board. Shannon McIntyre had the Crusaders' next chance, but Erin Asquith was quick to snare that shot to keep the game scoreless.

Hannah Swift got Warner to come off of her line and her shot got past a sprawling MU kepper but Lia Melasi was there to boot the ball out of harms way and keep the Crusaders and Highlanders even.

In 89th minute, HC was whistled for a foul inside its own 18-yard box and Andrea Johnson stepped up to take the penalty kick for Madonna. The senior calmly stepped to the penalty spot and sent her shot to the right, past a diving Asquith for the game's only score.

The Crusaders are off until Tuesday when they make the short trip to Schoolcraft College for a scrimmage. The Crusaders will entertain the University of Detroit on Friday Sept. 5th at 4pm.

POST GAME QUOTES
Head coach Paul Thomas on the change in play from the first half to the second
"I think mentality. They are a great team and come in with a good reputation. I think we over thought that and played like we didn't want to give up a goal, not like we wanted to score a goal. In the second half we went out and were by far the best team and got what we deserved."

On the break before the next set of games
"It will help us get healthy and let us refocus and work on a few things we took from our first three games."
