BOX SCORE

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - - Behind 12 kills each from Whitney Fuelling and Lubovj Tihomirova, the No. 7 Madonna volleyball team swept Concordia 3-0 (25-15, 25-22, 25-17) to move to 13-1 on the season and 1-0 in WHAC action. Concordia falls to 9-3 overall, 0-1 in loop play.

The Crusaders jumped out to an 11-3 lead early in set one before the Cards called a time out. Coming out of the break, MU continued its dominance in the set, using three kills from Mary McGinnis and taking advantage of seven CUAA errors to see the scoreboard read 23-7 in its favor.

Concordia mounted the comeback trail, reeling off three straight points to make it 23-10 and CUAA took five of the next six points to make it 24-15 before head coach Jerry Abraham called time out. The break worked as Tihomirova took an Inta Grinvalds set and put the ball to the floor for the 25-15 win.

Set two of the night was much closer than the first, even with Madonna opening up a 10-5 lead early. Concordia came back to tie the match at 11-11 and again at 12-12 before taking the lead at 14-13. The two sides traded points back and forth before MU took the lead back for good at 19-18 and used two more McGinnis kills and a hard swing from freshman Megan Fricke to take a 25-22 win and a two set to none lead.

The final set of the match saw MU connecting at a .583 clip. Just two attack errors against the 16 kills in the set gave Madonna its highest attacking percentage of the night. Concordia took the lead early, holding a 13-11 edge before MU scored nine of the next 11 points to take the lead back for good at 20-15. The Crusaders took advantage of Grinvalds time at the service line, scoring five points with the junior setter at the line. A pair of kills from Martie Mazur and another from McGinnis gave MU the 25-17 win and the sweep in the match.

Grinvalds handed out 33 assists to continue her lead in the WHAC. Brynn Kerr added eight digs while McGinnis has two solo bocks to go along with blocks from Fricke and Fuelling.

Shawna Dorton and Sarah Iverson led the Cards with seven kills each.

Madonna returns to the court on Friday, stepping out of league play to battle with NCAA Division II foe Findlay. Match time in Findlay, Ohio, is set for 7:30pm.
