SAN DIEGO, Calif. - - The Madonna volleyball team opened play on Friday at the Seaside Invitational on the campus of Point Loma Nazarene in San Diego and came away wit a pair of 3-0 wins. MU downed Ashford (IA) in the opening match of the tournament and then dispatched with Mount Marty (SD) in the night cap. The wins move Madonna to 7-0 on the season.

ASHFORD
In the opener against Ashford, Madonna never trailed in any of the three sets, easily cruising to the sweep. Senior All-American Lubovj Tihomirova and fellow senior Whitney Fuelling paced the Crusader attack, each putting down 10 kills with Fuelling connecting on 10 of her 19 swings with just three errors for a .368 hitting percentage in the 25-22, 25-15, 25-21.

Madonna held Ashford to a .112 hitting percentage, using 9.5 team blocks to stifle the AU attack. Tihomirova along with Inta Grinvalds and freshman Karie Altman led the block party with four each with Altman’s being a career high for the 6-0 newcomer.

Grinvalds, the nation’s leader in assists last season, handed out a match high 31 assists while libero Brynn Kerr led all players with 16 digs, just one off of her season high.

MOUNT MARTY
The second match of the day saw the Crusaders pitted against Mount Marty and much like the opener, MU easily rolled to a 3-0 sweep. Tihomirova led the way again, posting 14 kills, the only MU player to reach double digits. Fuelling put down nine balls while adding seven digs.

The Crusaders never trailed in set one, winning 25-11. MU did trail, but only for a short time in both sets two and three but rebounded to win both 25-17 and 25-15.

The Madonna attack and blocking held Mt. Marty to a .000 attacking percentage as the 21 kills the Lancers had were cancelled out by their 21 errors. MU also out-blocked Mt. Marty 6.5 to 2.

Grinvalds handed out a match best 26 assists while Kerr had nine digs.

Madonna wraps up play at the Seaside Invite on Saturday with a 2:00pm match against the College of Idaho before facing off with No. 8 Point Loma Nazarene at 9:00pm. Live stats as well as Pay-Per-View audio and video (via Point Loma) is available by clicking HERE
