BOX SCORE

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - - The Madonna men’s soccer team opened WHAC play on Saturday with a 2-1 win over Aquinas on the rain soaked turf of the AQ Soccer Field. MU improved to 3-1 overall and 1-0 in loop action while AQ fell to  2-3 and 0-1.

The Crusaders  - who are receiving votes in the NAIA Coaches' poll - got on the board early as Keith Sied took a pass from Doron Drai and found the back of the net behind Ben Richardson at the six minute mark for a 1-0 lead.

The Saints squared the match at 1-1 a little over two minutes later when Jeff Larson beat MU's Steven Besk for the equalizer.

Sied gave MU the lead in the 32nd minute, doing the work himself to beat Richardson again for a 2-1 lead that the Crusaders would not relinquish.

Besk made three saves in the second half to preserve the win for the Crusaders. The match was a physical one with 21 fouls being whistled and six cautions being issued.

The Crusaders return to action on Tuesday with another WHAC battle, this time against Concordia. Match time at Greenmead Field is set for 4pm.
