BOX SCORE
Livonia,
Mich..
– A goal in each half,
including the game winner by Mark Pikula propelled the Madonna men’s soccer team
to a 2-0 win over visiting Cornerstone on Saturday at Greenmead Field. With the
win MU improved to 3-2-1 overall and 1-1 in the WHAC. CU fell to 2-4-0 and 0-1-0
in the conference with the loss.
Madonna came out
aggressive, taking the play to Cornerstone early on. This strategy paid off as
Pikula took a long pass from T.J. Djkoic into the top of the 18-yard box and
fired a shot that landed inside the far post for a 1-0 Crusader lead just 11:46
into the match.
MU carried its
lead into the halftime intermission, and added to that lead in the 68th
minute off of a free kick when Darrel Quinn struck the ball to a waiting Djkoic
who one-timed a pass back to Quinn. Quinn, who missed Madonna’s 2-1 loss to
Davenport on Tuesday, then fired a shot past a diving Brent Grube for a 2-0 MU
lead.
CU did not record
another shot on goal the remainder of the match and MU cruised to a 2-0 win.
Kristofer Lyons
made three saves in posting his second shutout of the season. The Crusaders out
shot the Golden Eagles 15-7, while CU led with three corners.
Madonna is back
in action on Tuesday when it hosts Concordia in a 4pm match at Greenmead.
