The Madonna baseball team is just two wins away from their first ever regional championship, but they will have to wait until at least 4:00 pm to get started as rain continues to delay games in Indianapolis. Crusaders Start Regional Play with 5-0 Blanking of Taylor
The Madonna baseball team started the 2006 NAIA Region VIII tournament with a 5-0 shutout of Taylor Wednesday afternoon. Starter Derek Dufrane picked up his seventh win of the season, going the distance while fanning nine and allowing just five hits. Ramsey Named Player of the Year, One of 7 Crusaders Honored
Madonna University senior third baseman Ben Ramsey was named the 2006 WHAC baseball Player of the Year in a statement released by the league today.  The Englewood, Ohio native leads MU in nine offensive categories and helped the Crusaders capture their second straight WHAC title.  Six other Crusaders were named to the league first team including two-time selection Todd Kalmbach, Jason Barbeau and Derek  Dufrane.  Head Coach Greg Haeger was also named the 2006 Coach of the Year, his second straight selection and third of his career.  MORE

The Madonna baseball team pounded out 25 hits and 22 runs Saturday but it wasn't enough to stay perfect in WHAC play, coming away with a split versus Aquinas at Ilitch Ballpark. Kalmbach Named WHAC Player of the Week
Madonna senior first baseman Todd Kalmbach is the WHAC baseball Player of the Week for April 17, 2006. The Wyandotte, Michigan native led a potent Madonna offense that scored 86 runs in six games by hitting .529 and driving in 16 runs. Kalmbach went 9-for-17 with six runs scored and six extra base hits, including a pair of home runs while slugging an impressive 1.176 as Madonna moved to 8-0 in conference and 20-15-1 overall.

The Madonna offense has left no doubt they are a force to be recon with lately, putting up more mind boggling numbers Saturday with a sweep at Concordia 22-7 and 10-4. Madonna University senior third baseman Ben Ramsey is the WHAC baseball Player of the Week for April 10, 2006. The Englewood, Ohio native put together an impressive week at the plate, going 12-for-21 with nine runs scored and nine batted in over six games for the Crusaders. Ramsey also launched a pair of homers and was 2-for-2 on stolen bases while leading the team to a 4-2 record. For the week, Ramsey hit at a .517 clip and slugged .952 with four extra base hits. MORE

The Madonna baseball team saw their win streak come to an end Wednesday with a 7-4 loss at St. Francis (IN) Wednesday afternoon.  Todd Kalmbach drove in a pair of runs and Tony Luttman had a 2-for-3 day with a RBI in defeat. The Madonna baseball team fell to 6-13-1 after a 6-1 loss Sunday at Spalding (KY). Keegan Beaton started and took the loss on the mound, surrendering three runs in three innings of work. Sophomore Will Kennedy went eight strong innings fanning a career high 11 in a tough luck 1-0 loss to Spalding Saturday afternoon in Louisville, Kentucky. The Pelican's score a run in the bottom of the first and hung on for the victory, holding MU to just one hit, a Kevin Entsminger single. The two teams will play the rubber-match in the three game set Sunday at 1:00 pm.

Dave Herrick's (top) three-run homerun in the top of the 10th inning propelled Madonna to a 5-3 extra inning victory at Spalding (KY) Friday evening. With the game tied 1-1 in the 10th, Jason Barbeau clubbed a solo homer, part of his 4-for-5 day and Herrick added the insurance in the form of his second homer of the year. Greg Spanel started and fanned eight in seven innings of work as sophomore Ryan Bardoni picked up the win in relief and Kyle Fedorka notched his first save of the season. The Madonna baseball team dropped to 3-11-1 on the season following a 2-1 loss Sunday afternoon at Lee University in Cleveland, Tennessee. The Crusaders, who were in jeopardy of being no-hit for the second time this season, broke through for a run in the top of the ninth on a RBI single by Kyle Fedorka, which scored Manny Alvarado who broke up the no hitter earlier in the inning. The Crusaders tied the game at 1-1, then saw Lee score a run in their final at-bat for the win.  Box Score

Madonna pitching was beaten up as Eric Wendling took the loss in game one 10-2 and Greg Spanel was the losing pitcher in a 10-0, mercy rule shortened, game two. Kennedy Named Conference Pitcher of the Week
Madonna sophomore right hander Will Kennedy was named the WHAC baseball Pitcher-of-the-Week for March 14th in a statement released by the league today. The sophomore from Westland, Michigan notched a career high 10 strikeouts in his first outing of the year, a complete game shutout of Bethany (CA) then followed up with three no-hit innings at #23 Concordia-Irvine last week.

The Madonna baseball team put a capper on their tough west coast trip falling 9-4 and tying 6-6 at Concordia-Irvine Friday afternoon. Game one featured a 40-minute rain delay and game two was suspended due to darkness. Kyle Fedorka collected four hits on the day and Jason Barbeau was 4-for-5 in game two alone. Crusaders Drop to 1-6 After Losses Monday
The offensive struggles of #20 Madonna continued Monday with a pair of losses at Point Loma Nazarene's Spring Break Classic. The Crusaders mustered seven hits but scored just three times in a 9-3 morning loss to Bethany University. Madonna left the bases loaded twice, leading to the first loss of the season for starter Mike Hand. In game two, Madonna squared off with #6 Point Loma Nazarene and walked away with a 9-2 defeat. Freshman Keegan Beaton was a bright spot for MU, making his first collegiate start and striking out six in five innings of work, but taking  the loss.  Ben Ramsey was 2-for-5 in game one while catcher Zack Flavin picked up his first collegiate RBI. No Crusaders had multiple hits in the nightcap.

Former Madonna baseball player Doug Brooks (left) will continue his playing career at the next level. Brooks has signed a minor-league contract with the L.A. Dodgers and will report to Vero Beach, Florida for spring training next month.

Czarnik Join Baseball Staff
Madonna head baseball coach Greg Haeger announced the addition of former University of Detroit head coach Chris Czarnik as an assistant on the 2006 Crusader staff. Czarnik who ran the Titans program from 2001-2004 will serve as the first-base coach and serve as the bullpen coach and assist with instruction of the MU pitchers.

Three Crusaders Honored by Collegiate Baseball
A trio of Madonna baseball players were honored Tuesday, as they were selected to the Collegiate Baseballís preseason All-America and Players to Watch teams. The honorees included second team selection Derek Dufrane who was a NAIA second team All-America selection last season after posting a 10-2 record with a 1.40 ERA and just 10 walks on the season. Hard-throwing lefty newcomer Eric Wendling and senior first-baseman Todd Kalmbach were on the watch list. Kalmbach led the team in hitting in 2005. The trio are a big reason the magazine picked MU #17 in their preseason top-25 poll.

Crusaders Debut at #17 in NAIA Preseason Top-25 Poll
Coming off their first ever WHAC championship and a 40-16 record a year ago, the Madonna baseball team is picked #17 in the 2006 NAIA preseason top-25 poll released today.  Returning 22 letterwinners including seven position starters and All-America pitchers Derek Dufrane (right) and Kyle Fedorka with a mix of 19 talented newcomers have the Crusaders in their first ever preseason top-25.

The Madonna University baseball team was one of six recognized nationally by the NAIA for their academic prowess during the 2004-05 academic year.  Each year the NAIA recognizes teams that collectively earn a GPA of 3.0 or higher.  The Crusaders ranked third among the six teams that qualified with a 3.11 team GPA.  more
