COMMERCE, Mich.
--
The No. 2 seeded Madonna women's soccer team dropped a heartbreaker
to the No. 3 seeded Siena Heights Saints, 1-0, in the semifinals of the WHAC
Tournament on Tuesday afternoon at Walled Lake Northern High School.
Just one week ago, Madonna defeated Siena Heights for the second
time this season, but today the Saints used a goal by Carol Roman in
the 61st minute to hang on to the upset win.
Madonna's offense was only able to post five total shots, including
three on net. Siena Heights recorded seven total shot
attempts, including five on net.
Junior goalkeeper
Traci Anderson
(Brighton, Mich./Brighton HS) recorded four saves for the
Crusaders.
The loss not only ends Madonna's season, but also ends the Crusaders
streak of consecutive regional tournament appearances which dates
back to 2000.
Seniors
Kelly Japowicz
(Harper Woods, Mich./Grosse Pointe North HS),
Diane Foley
(Taylor, Mich./Riverview Gabriel Richard HS),
Katie Kramer
(Highland, Mich./Milford HS) and
Teresa Henderson
(Walled Lake, Mich./Bishop Foley HS) all end their athletic
careers with Madonna following the semifinal loss.
Japowciz closes out a record breaking career in a Crusaders uniform,
finishing as one of the most decorated players in Madonna history.
Japowicz is second all-time at Madonna in career points (132) and
goals (56).
Siena Heights will move on to the WHAC Tournament championship to
face Cornerstone on Saturday in Grand Rapids. The win today
clinches a regional tournament appearance for the Saints.
