GRAND RAPIDS, MI. -  Madonna University, which has won outright or shared the past five regular-season Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference women’s soccer titles, is the favorite once again heading into the 2005 season, according to a vote of the league’s six head coaches.

Madonna received all six first-place votes and 36 total points out of a possible 36.

In addition, the Crusaders placed three players on the preseason All-Conference women’s soccer team, which was also announced. Senior midfielder Lacey Catarino, sophomore defender Loren Tacconelli and junior forward Kelly Japowicz were all selected to the first team. Japowicz was also voted the preseason Player of the Year after finishing second in the league in scoring in 2004.

Siena Heights University is the pick to finish behind the Crusaders in 2005. After a third place finish a year ago, the Saints received 28 total points to edge out 2004 WHAC tournament champion Cornerstone University who tallied 26 points. Siena Heights also boasts the most players picked to the preseason team with four selections. Christine Coleman, Carey Canty, Katharine Koch and newcomer Nikki Romano all were tabbed by WHAC coaches and sports information directors.

Third-place pick Cornerstone sees three Golden Eagles on the preseason team in Lena Baldwin, Grace Kelly and Mindy Erny.

Aquinas College is picked to finish third with 13 points. The Saints are followed by Indiana Tech with 12 total points. The Lady Warriors are represented by first team selection Kara Walker, the WHAC goals leader in 2004.

Rounding out the poll is Concordia University. The Cardinals are coming off a 0-14 season in 2004, but the future looks bright in Ann Arbor with preseason pick Ashley Gay anchoring an improved squad.

The 2005 women’s soccer season gets underway in just a few weeks time and concludes with the 2005 WHAC Tournament beginning October 26th with the championship game Saturday October 29.
