BOX SCORE

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.A pair of first half goals by Aquinas’ Bri Hill proved to be too much for the Madonna women’s soccer team to overcome as the Crusaders fell 2-1 in Grand Rapids on Wednesday afternoon. MU ends the season with an 8-7-2 record.

The Crusaders had the game’s first scoring chances as just 35 seconds in Lauren Hess sent a shot in that made Kristina Gladstone come off of her line to stop and keep the match scoreless. MU had three more chances in the first 8 ½ minutes as Dina Allie, Kaila Moore and Hess all took shots that Gladstone had to make saves on.

AQ got on the board in the 10th minute as Hill took a pass from Jessica Greaney and got her shot past Chelsea Gregg for a 1-0 Saint lead. Aquinas added its second goal in the 33rd minute as Hill found the back of the net again, this time off of a pair of passes to make it 2-0 heading into halftime.

Coming out of the intermission, Hill almost made it 3-0 as she took a shot that bounced off of the post and out of harms way.

Madonna got on the board in the 51st minute as after a Rachaelle Mirto corner kick, Andrea Johnson took a pass from Andrea Muscat and her hard shot found the back of the net to cut the Aquinas lead to 2-1 with just under 40 minutes remaining.

The Crusaders almost tied the match in the 53rd minute as Shelby Mathison’s shot had to be snared by Gladstone to keep the match 2-1 in favor of the home team. MU had two more chances to tie the match as Sarah Rokuski forced Gladstone to make a save on her shots in the 69th and 73rd minutes but the AQ keeper proved up to the task and kept the score at 2-1 to allow the Saints to advance to Saturday’s WHAC championship match.

Madonna out shot Aquinas 16-12, including holding an 8-5 margin in shots on goal. Gregg made three saves, compared to seven by her counterpart Gladstone.

Madonna, which ends its season for the second straight season in the WHAC semi-finals, bids good bye to its two seniors, goalie Traci Anderson and Mirto.
