BOX SCORE

ADRIAN, Mich. The Madonna women’s soccer team saw its bid for a home playoff game slip away Wednesday afternoon in a 1-0 loss at Siena Heights. The Crusaders finish the regular season at 8-6-2 overall and 7-4-1 in WHAC play.

The match was very slow in developing as the majority of the first half was played in the midfield. The Crusaders did have the only two real scoring chances of the opening frame as a header by Rachel Thompson in he 12th minute forced Haley Mancini off of her line and into a leaping save to keep the match scoreless. MU had another chance in the 45th minute as a Kaila Moore shot was snared by Mancini just before the half ended to send the two sides into the locker room tied at 0-0.

Coming out of the intermission, the two sides traded shots, with SHU having the first scoring chance of the second half as Kristin Brundage pressed up from her spot on the back line and sent in a shot on Crusader freshman keeper Chelsea Gregg that the MU net minder snared to keep the Saints off the board.

The Crusaders had four quality chances to net the first goal of the game in span of just over four minutes as Moore’s line drive shot was stopped by Mancini in the 62nd minute and Ashley Stoychoff’s shot in the 63rd minute hit the cross bar and bounced back into play. A Moore header in the 64th minute went just wide of the frame but the sophomore forward found the ball again just 68 seconds later and sent in a shot that once again forced Mancini into making another save to keep the match scoreless.

After SHU earned a corner in the 66th minute, Gregg pulled out another save on a Bridgette Scott strike to keep the Saints off the board. The MU keeper had to make back-to-back saves in the 72nd minute on shots by Lindsey Mancini and Amanda Marinello.

After nearly 85 minutes of scoreless soccer, SHU cracked the scoring column at the 84:51 mark as Marinello took a pass from Ashley Poirier and chipped her shot over Gregg for a 1-0 Saint lead.

Madonna pressed up in an effort to tie the match but saw its last effort, a Moore shot in the 87th minute sail high and fell by the 1-0 final.

The match was very even on the score sheet as SHU out-shot MU by a 15-10 final, but held just a 5-4 edge in shots on goal. The Saints did however, hold a significant lead in corner kicks at 7-2. Each keeper made four saves in the contest.

Madonna will have seven days to regroup after today’s loss, as the Crusaders move onto the WAHC tournament next Wednesday. MU will be on the road to open post season play at a to be determined opponent. Playoff pairings will be announced on Monday.
