Lauren Hess had the
game winning goal and an assist in Madonna's 3-2 win over Siena
Heights on Saturday. |
LIVONIA,
Mich..
– A Lauren Hess
goal in the 66th minute proved to be the game winner as the Madonna
women’s soccer team had to battle and hang on for a 3-2 win over visiting Siena
Heights on Saturday afternoon at Greenmead Field. Hess (above) also posted an
assist in the MU win that helped the Crusaders put a firm hold onto second place
in the WHAC standings.
MU (6-2-1;
5-1-0 WHAC) had the game’s first real scoring chance in the fourth minute as
Ashley Stoychoff’s shot on net had to be cleared away by a SHU (5-4-0; 3-2-0
WHAC) defender after Haley Mancini had fallen down outside of the goal mouth.
Allison
Septer had SHU’s best chance in the opening 45 minutes as her shot in the 44th
minute hit the cross bar. Madonna used their possession after the goal kick and
Stoychoff started the offense again as her initial shot was tipped by Mancini to
the waiting foot of Kati Germane who wasted no time in firing the shot past an
outstretched Mancini towards the far post for a 1-0 Crusader lead with just 31
seconds left in the first half.
The
Crusaders made it 2-0 in the 52nd minute as Kaila Moore shot a
rebound of a Hess shot past Mancini for her fourth goal of the season.
A costly
foul just outside the 18-yard box was whistled was on MU in the 55th and the
ensuing free kick from Kristen Brundge found the head of Lindsey Mancini to cut
the lead to 2-1.
Hess found
the ball on her foot again for the Royal Blue and Gold in the 66th
minute and fired her shot from about 22 yards out that just ducked under the
cross bar to extend the lead for MU to 3-1.
The two
sides traded shots and SHU made it a one goal game at the 89:16 mark of the
match when Kim Stoutenburg got her head on a ball in the middle of the goal and
put it home, but it was a case of too little, too late as MU ran out the clock
for the win.
Traci
Anderson made two saves for the Crusaders against her former team. Her
counterpart Mancini made one and also got one from her defense. Hess led the way
on the offensive end with her goal and assist, while Stoychoff chipped in with a
pair of assists of her own.
The
Crusaders take a brief break from league action when they travel to Ferris State
on Tuesday for a 4:00pm match up with the Bulldogs.
