BOX SCORE
LIVONIA,
Mich..
– A goal by Ashley
Stoychoff in the 39th minute proved to be the game winner as the Madonna women’s
soccer team opened the WHAC season with a 1-0 triumph over Cornerstone at
Greenmead Field.
The Crusaders
(2-1-1; 1-0-0 WHAC) carried much of the action in the first 45 minutes,
outshooting the Golden Eagles (0-1-0; 0-1-0 WHAC) 9-0, including holding a 4-0
edge in shots on goal.
Defender
Rachaelle Mirto gave MU its first scoring chance as her shot from the right side
of the 18-yard box was snared by CU’s Mindy Erny to keep the match scoreless.
The Crusaders continued to pepper Erny with a bevy of shots including a pair by
Lia Melasi before Stoychoff found the back of the net.
In the 39th
minute, Erny came off of her line to play an initial shot by Ellen O’Rear and
made the save on O’Rear but could not control the rebound and slipped just
outside of the six yard box allowing Stoychoff to take the loose ball and fire
it to the upper left 90 and a 1-0 Madonna edge.
Cornerstone had a
golden opportunity to square the match in the 48th minute when it was
awarded a penalty kick after a foul was whistled against Madonna in the penalty
area. Mary Koscielniak stepped up and sent her shot wide of the right post,
keeping it a 1-0 game in favor of MU.
Following another
foul on the Crusaders in the 65th minute, Ashleigh Lund had the
Golden Eagles next chance to tie the match as her shot forced MU keeper Tracy
Anderson to come off of her line. Anderson played the ball and sacrificed her
body, crashing into Lund in the process, but kept CU off the board.
Neither side
really mounted much of an offensive threat from that point on and a stellar
Madonna defense allowed the Crusaders to open the home and WHAC slates with a
1-0 win.
For Stoychoff, it
was her second game winning goal of the season. Anderson had to make just one
save, in posting her second shutout of the year.
The Crusaders
return to action on Wednesday when Davenport comes calling to Greenmead for a
4pm match.
