2004 Madonna Women's Basketball Player Bio's

Head Coach Marylou Jansen

9th Year at Madonna
124-115 Career Record

Marylou Jansen returns to the bench for her ninth season at the helm of the Crusaders. In that time, Jansen has earned distinction as one of the top coaches in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference. Jansen’s has led the Crusaders to three WHAC titles and was selected as WHAC Coach-of-the-Year in 2000-01 and 2001-02. Jansen recorded her 100th career victory Feburary 21, 2002, a 82-47 home victory over Concordia University.

Under Jansen’s leadership, the Crusaders have amassed a 124-115 record and set another school first by qualifying for the NAIA National Tournament in 1996-1997 & 2002-03. In the tournament, Madonna was three points shy of knocking off the number one seed in the tournament on both occasions.

Not only have Coach Jansen’s teams found success on the court, they have also proven to be successful in the classroom with a graduation rate of 91%. Marylou recognizes and takes great pride in this accomplishment.

Jansen earned respect for her coaching talents beyond Madonna and the WHAC when she was selected to the Detroit Catholic League Hall of Fame in 2001.

Prior to joining Madonna, Jansen spent time in the high school ranks. Jansen’s coaching career began in 1984 at Dearborn Divine Child High School where she started a six-year stint as freshman and junior varsity girl’s basketball coach. Following that, she changed gears and coached three years of freshman and junior varsity boys’ basketball at Grosse Ile High School.

In 1993, Jansen returned to Divine Child where she served four seasons as head coach. Her accomplishments are numerous and begin with leading Divine Child to back-to-back State Championships in 1993 and 1994. Individual honors came along with championships for Jansen as she was named Class B Coach of the Year in 1993 and MHSAA Women’s Coach of the Year in 1994. In addition to basketball, she was also head coach of Divine Child’s softball team for eight successful seasons during which her teams won four straight Catholic League titles and made three state quarterfinal appearances.

After graduating from Divine Child High School, Jansen attended Michigan State University where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Microbiology. She continued her education at Wayne State University, receiving secondary certification in Science Education. She began teaching Science at Grosse Ile High School. While teaching, Marylou earned a Masters degree in Counseling. Marylou has remained at Grosse Ile as a Guidance Counselor for the past 13 years and is now the Director of Guidance.

Marylou’s parents, Paul and JoAnn Jansen are big MU basketball fans and attend most home games.
