LIVONIA, Mich.
-- The Madonna women's basketball team dropped their final home
contest of the 2006 calendar year after Albion handed MU a 70-50
loss on Tuesday night at the Activities Center.
Freshman guard
Stephanie Piotrowski
(Petersburg, Mich./Ida HS) led the Crusaders with 12 points,
all of which came via the three-point shot.
Sophomore guard
Alyssa Guerin
(Plymouth, Mich./Plymouth Salem HS) added 10 points and
posted three blocked shots in the loss. Junior guard
Cali Crawford
(Rochester, Mich./Oakland Christian Academy) scored nine
points, all of which came in the first half.
Albion's Kati Till led all competitors with 17 points and eight
rebounds in the contest.
In
the first half of play, Albion limited Madonna to just a .280
(7-of-25) shooting percentage from the field, including only .273
(3-of-11) from beyond the arc. The Britons shot .400 (10-of-25)
from the floor in the first half, including a blistering .500
(3-of-6) from behind the three-point line.
Crawford paced the Crusaders in the first period of play with nine
points. MU led only twice in the first half before the Britons
jumped out to a 14-point lead after Autumn Charnley knocked down a
short jumper with 5:12 left before halftime.
Madonna
would cut the Albion lead down to seven points after Crawford buried a
three-pointer at the top of the key off an assist by Piotrowski with 3:10 left
in the half. Albion increased the lead back to 14 points just before the half
ended to give the Britons a 34-20 advantage.
The Crusaders would get no closer than 10 points in the
second half after
Rebecca Rufli
(Fenton, Mich./Linden HS) knocked down a mid-range jumper off an assist
from Guerin with 8:17 left in the contest.
Albion then reeled off a 15-5 run over the final eight minutes which would
lengthen the Britons' lead to the final margin of 20 points (70-50) as time
expired.
Madonna's shooting picked up during the second half with the Crusaders shooting
.429 (12-of-28) from the floor, including .500 (5-of-10) from the behind the
three-point line.
The
Crusaders will return to play this Saturday (Dec. 16) at Taylor in a 3:00 p.m.
(ET) non-conference tilt against the Trojans.
