Goshen. |
LIVONIA, Mich.
-- A stingy defensive effort by the Madonna women's basketball
sparked a 10-3 second half run, which saw the Crusaders claim a
three-point lead over Goshen before holding off a late charged by
the Maple Leafs in a 54-51 win on Saturday afternoon at the
Activities Center.
Madonna's win bumps the Crusaders up to 4-7 overall while Goshen
falls to 3-9.
Junior guard
Cali Crawford
(Rochester, Mich./Oakland Christian Academy) paced the
Crusaders with 13 points and six assists. Freshman guard
Stephanie Piotrowski
(Petersburg, Mich./Ida HS) dialed in 12 points, all of which
came via the three-point shot in the win for Madonna.
The Crusaders held an early eight point advantage in the first half
before Goshen took a 22-18 lead at the half.
Madonna started the second half with back-to-back three-point
buckets by Piotrowski and senior forward
Diane Foley (Taylor, Mich./Riverview Gabriel Richard
HS), which fueled the Crusaders comeback.
With
the score tied at 32-32 junior forward
Caryn Inman
(Oxford, Mich./Oxford HS) buried the second of two free
throws which gave the Crusaders a lead they would not relinquish.
Piotrowski would knock down two consecutive three-pointers which
allowed the Crusaders to take their biggest lead of the contest at
nine points (41-32).
Goshen would cut the lead to three points with under a minute left
in the game, yet MU staved off the comeback bid with a pair of
Crawford free throws sealing the win.
Inman, who is fresh
off of an All-American season with the MU volleyball team, scored
five points and posted four boards and one blocked shot in her
season debut. Sophomore forward
Christie Carrico
(Waterford, Mich./Waterford Mott HS) turned in another solid
performance with nine points, eight rebounds and three steals.
Madonna heads into the final game of a three-game home stand by
hosting Albion College on Tuesday, Dec. 12 in a 7:30 pm (ET) tip off
at the Activities Center.
