LIVONIA, Mich.
-- The Madonna women's basketball team could not overcome a 18-point
halftime dificit, dispite outscoring Marygrove 50-26 in the second
half as they fell 78-74 in front of the home crowd Wednesday.
Christie Carrico led MU
with 20 points and 11 rebounds in defeat.
The
Crusaders had no answer early for Marygrove's full-court trap
defense, turning the ball over 12 times and being outscored 10-2 off
those turnovers.
Shanaye Davis had the
hot hand for the Mustangs scoring 16 first half points as her team
built a 42-24 lead at the break.
In the second half,
Madonna come out hot, adjusting to the pressure defense, including
an 11-2 run to take their first lead of the game, 53-52 on a jumper
by Luahanna Waybrant midway through the second stanza.
It was a back-and-forth
duel from that point as each team traded blows. Madonna led at
one point by seven, 69-62, their largest lead of the game, only to
see it slip away at the hands of more pressure defense down the
stretch.
Without the teams
leading scorer and rebounds, Martina Franklin, who missed the game
due to injury, the Crusaders could not weather the final Marygrove
storm falling 78-74.
Three Crusaders
finished the game in double figures with Alyssa Guerin scoring 18
and Stephanie Piotrowski adding 14.
Marygrove was led by
Davis who scored a game high 28 points while teammate Sade Powell
added 23.
The win improves
Marygrove to 5-5 on the season and drops the Crusaders to 3-7
heading into Saturday's home contest with Goshen (IN) at noon.
