LIVONIA, Mich.
-- Martina Franklin (Redford,
Mich./Redford Union HS) recorded her fourth double-double in
five games after scoring 20 points and 13 rebounds to lead the
Madonna women's basketball team past Purdue Calumet 51-48 on
Saturday evening at the Activities Center.
The Crusaders (2-3) held a 24-20 lead at the half after trailing
only one time in the first period of play. Madonna would
stretch the lead to as much as 12 points in the second half, before
holding off a late rally by the Peregrines (1-2) for the three-point
win (51-48).
Madonna freshman guard Stephanie Piotrowski
(Petersburg, Mich./Ida HS) rediscovered her shooting touch
after knocking down four three-point buckets for 12 points in the
win.
Junior guard Cali Crawford
(Rochester, Mich./Oakland Christian Academy) recorded eight
points and four assists for the Crusaders.
Madonna won despite a poor shooting performance as a team, shooting
only .323 from the field (21-for-65), including .174 from beyond the
arc (4-of-13). The Crusaders struggles from the free throw
line continued against the Peregrines, shooting just .385 from the
charity stripe (5-of-13).
The Crusaders defense held Purdue Calumet to a .360 shooting
percentage from the floor (18-of-50), including just .304 (7-of-23)
in the first half.
MU will return to the floor on Wednesday, Nov. 15, in a
non-conference matchup at Tiffin with tip off scheduled for 5:30
p.m. (ET)
