GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.
-- The Madonna women's basketball team came up one game short of
advancing to the NAIA Division II National Tournament after being
knocked off by Cornerstone 71-56 Monday night in the WHAC Tournament
championship game.
Madonna shot only 27-percent (18-of-68) in the contest, including
only 25-percent (6-of-24) from beyond the arc.
The Golden Eagles, who earned an automatic bid to the national
tournament, held MU's leading scorer
Martina Franklin (Redford, Mich./Redford Union HS)
to only nine points in the contest.
The loss also signifies the end of the collegiate basketball careers
for Madonna seniors Lindsay Klemmer
(Plymouth, Mich./Plymouth Salem HS) and
Diane Foley (Taylor,
Mich./Riverview Gabriel Richard HS). Klemmer scored 10
points and collected three rebounds in her final appearance.
Madonna was led by freshman guard Stephanie
Piotrowski (Petersburg, Mich./Ida HS), who scored
14 points, including 12 from beyond the arc.
Franklin led all players on the boards with 15 rebounds in the loss.
