CALEDONIA, Mich.
-- Martina Franklin (Redford,
Mich./Redford Union HS) scored 26 points and
Alyssa Guerin (Plymouth,
Mich./Plymouth Salem HS) added 17 points as Madonna knocked off
No. 18 Davenport in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference
Tournament semifinals Saturday afternoon.
Madonna (15-17) led 35-26 at halftime and staved off a second half
comeback by top-seeded Davenport (25-7) to advance to the tournament
championship game.
The Crusaders were able to limit the Panthers' offensive options in
the first half of play as Davenport shot only 23-percent (7-of-31)
from the field. Davenport's leading scorer and conference
Player of the Year Jeanette Woodberry was held to only two points in
the first 20 minutes of action.
Madonna lost the lead only twice in the second half and forced a
total of 18 turnovers by Davenport in the win.
The Crusaders shot 39-percent (24-of-61) from the field, including
38-percent (3-of-8) from behind the three-point line and
outrebounded the Panthers, 44-40.
Davenport finished the game by shooting 38-percent (24-of-63) from
the floor, including 53-percent (17-of-32) in the second half.
Junior Caryn Inman (Oxford,
Mich./Oxford HS) added 14 points for Madonna and Davenport's
Woodberry scored 19.
With the win, Madonna will travel to Grand Rapids, to take on
third-seeded Cornerstone in the WHAC Championship game for the right
to advance to the NAIA Division II National Tournament, which will
be held in Sioux City, Iowa (March 7-13).
