LIVONIA, Mich.
-- First year head coach Carl Graves
guided Madonna to a 79-63 win over Siena Heights in the WHAC
Tournament quarterfinals Wednesday night.
With the win, Graves ties former MU head coach Marylou Jansen for
the most wins in a season (14) by a first year head coach.
Junior forward Martina Franklin
(Redford, Mich./Redford Union HS) dominated the first half,
posting a double-double with 22 points and 11 rebounds all in the
first 20 minutes. Franklin would end up with game highs in
points (23) and rebounds (14) for Madonna.
The Crusaders led 41-34 at the half and would increase their lead to
as much as 21 points (69-48) in the second half before cruising to
the 13-point victory.
Madonna shot 46-percent (29-of-63) from the floor, including
55-percent (6-of-11) from beyond the arc. The Crusaders also
won the battle of the boards 44-39.
Sophomore guard Alyssa Guerin
(Plymouth, Mich./Plymouth Salem HS) added 15 points, seven
boards and four blocked shots for the Crusaders. Junior
forward Caryn Inman (Oxford,
Mich./Oxford HS) also chipped in with 11 points and eight
rebounds for MU.
Siena Heights was led by Laura Panozzo, who scored 23 points and
grabbed 11 rebounds in the loss.
The Crusaders will move on to the tournament semifinals and travel
to Caledonia, Mich. to take on top-seeded Davenport Saturday, Feb.
24 at 1:00 p.m.
