ANN ARBOR, Mich.
--
Junior forward Martina Franklin
(Redford, Mich./Redford Union HS) became the eighth player in
the Madonna women's basketball program history to top the 1,000
points mark, but the Crusaders were unable to finish out the season
with a win after Concordia ended up with a 71-69 decision over MU in
overtime.
Franklin, who led all players with 28 points and 14 rebounds, scored
her 1,000th career point with 16 minutes left in regulation on a lay
up.
Madonna led by two points with time winding down in regulation
before Concordia's Andrea Savage was fouled with :00.4 left on the
clock. Savage knocked down both free throws and Madonna was
unable to get off a final shot which sent the contest into overtime.
In the extra frame, the lead changed several times before the host
Cardinals grabbed a two-point advantage with under 12 seconds to
play.
Madonna tried three times to score an equalizing bucket but came up
short and Concordia escaped with the win.
Junior forward Caryn Inman
(Oxford, Mich./Oxford HS) scored 10 points and grabbed seven
boards for Madonna. Senior guard
Lindsay Klemmer (Plymouth, Mich./Plymouth Salem HS)
also added double digits for the Crusaders with 15 points.
Savage led the Cardinals with a career high 25 points.
Even with the loss, Madonna clinched home-court advantage in the
first round of the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference playoffs,
which begin next week. The Crusaders earned the number four
seed and will host fifth-seeded Siena Heights Wednesday, Feb. 21 at
7:30 p.m. in the Activities Center.
