LIVONIA, Mich.
-- Siena Heights exploded offensively in the second half, outscoring
Madonna 43-33 and holding off a late charge by the Crusaders for a
71-68 win Saturday afternoon at the Activities Center.
The Crusaders held a 35-28 lead at halftime after leading by as much
as 12 points before Che' Rogers ignited the Saints offense in the
second half.
Rogers led all scorers with 20 points, including 16 in the second
half, on seven-of-12 shooting, including four-of-four shooting from
behind the three-point line.
Siena Heights opened the second half on a 33-9 run and led by as
much as 17 points with 7:47 left in the game.
Madonna cut the Saints lead to seven points after
Cali Crawford
(Rochester, Mich./Oakland Christian Academy) made
back-to-back lay ups. Crawford then buried a pair of free
throws and added another lay up to trim Siena Heights lead to only
three points.
Alyssa Guerin
(Plymouth, Mich./Plymouth Salem HS) was fouled with 25
seconds left in the game after trying to convert on a steal by
Crawford. Guerin hit both free throws and MU trailed by only
one point.
On the ensuing possession, Crawford was called for back-to-back
fouls which sent Rogers to the line and she hit both shots to push
Siena Heights lead back to three points.
Madonna was unsuccessful in converting on three more possessions
over the final 13 seconds of play which sealed the win for the
Saints.
Siena Heights blistered the nets in the second half shooting
53-percent from the floor, including 55-percent from beyond the arc.
Crawford paced the Crusaders with 16 points. Junior forward
Martina Franklin
(Redford, Mich./Redford Union HS) posted her 17th career
double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds in the loss.
Christie Carrico
(Waterford, Mich./Waterford Mott HS) recorded her third
career double-double after posting 15 points and 14 rebounds against
the Saints. Freshman guard
Stephanie Piotrowski
(Petersburg, Mich./Ida HS) scored 10 points in the first
half, but was held scoreless in the final frame.
Madonna shot 38-percent from field (23-of-60) and 29-percent
(5-of-17) from behind the arc.
The Crusaders will return to action Wednesday, Jan. 20th in the
opening game of a men's-women's doubleheader against Concordia.
Coach Graves will send his troops on the floor for a 5:30 p.m. tip
off against the Cardinals.
