CALEDONIA, Mich. – The
Madonna women’s basketball team had upset on its mind and an upset
was in the air but Jeanette Woodberry and her 33 point performance
for Davenport was too much for the Crusaders to overcome as MU fell
74-70 on Saturday afternoon.
Caryn Inman (Oxford, Mich.)
led Madonna with 20 points and six rebounds while Tabatha Wydryck
(Riverview, Mich.) added 16, Christie Carrico (Waterford, Mich.)
had 15 and Becca Rufli (Fenton, Mich.) had 11 for MU. Woodberry’s
33 points and 14 rebounds led DU.
The Panthers showed early on why they
have earned the number seven ranking in the country by building a 10 point lead
over the opening 8:17 of the half before the Crusaders made a 17-0 run over the
next six minutes to take the lead at 24-20.
The two teams traded scores with DU
tying the game at 28-28 with 2:56 left in the opening half but Madonna stood up
to the challenge and fought back using two scores from Inman and a jumper by
Wydryck to take a six-point lead (34-28) lead into the locker room.
The second half saw MU extend the lead
to eight on two Inman free throws early on but Davenport battled back to tie the
game at 38-38 with 16:06 left. DU took the lead back on a jumper by Woodberry at
42-40. A lay-in by Stephanie Day (Livonia, Mich.) with 10:36 left
gave MU a one point lead but DU answered back to take a one point lead of its
own as the two sides then traded the lead five times over the next five-plus
minutes until the Panthers took the lead for good on a triple from Sara
Haverdink with 4:49 remaining.
The Crusaders kept the game with in
reach, cutting the lead to just two with 13 ticks left on a pair of Rufli free
throws, but could not get any closer, falling 74-70. The loss drops Madonna to
9-12 overall and 4-3 in WHAC play, while Davenport improves to 20-3 overall and
7-0 in loop action.
Madonna now beings the second half of
the WHAC slate with a 7:30pm tip-off at Indiana Tech on Wednesday night.
