LIVONIA, Mich.
-- The Madonna University women's basketball program received an
added bonus at their game Wednesday (Jan. 23) night, the signing at
halftime of Ida high school’s Kayla Spotts to a letter of
intent. Spottsbecame the sixth player to commit to head
coach Carl Graves for the 2008-09 season. She is also the
second recruit to sign from Ida high school, joining teammate Erin
Bentley, who signed with the program January 4th.
"The night could not have gotten any better for us," said Graves
following Wednesday’s overtime victory over Concordia.
"To add a player of Kayla’s ability to our family, as well as come back and win this game was a big boost for our program. I am
glad we were able to win for Kayla and her family who made it in
tonight.”
Spotts, a 5-9 forward is a two-sport standout at Ida high, earning
varsity letters in both volleyball and basketball over the past
three seasons. She was a second team all-LCAA conference performer
as a junior and defensive Most Valuable Player on the hardwood. On
the volleyball court, Spotts was a unanimous selection all-LCAA,
offensive Most Valuable Player, all-region, Monroe Evening News
all-region and team captain.
“Kayla is a great competitor
as evidence by her accolades in both basketball and volleyball,” said Graves.
“She is a heck of an athlete and we couldn’t be happier to have her in the
fold. We targeted her and Erin right away and are ecstatic to get them both.”
In addition to her time on
the court, Spotts has been active in other extra-curricular activities as a
member of the Ida high school Student Council, Youth and Government clubs and
serving as class secretary.
"One of the best rewards as a coach in recruiting is finding special players
that also come from special families," Graves continued. “I think that we hit a
home run with Kayla and the Spotts’ family. Her extended family and teammates
were here tonight to support her and cheer for us. I can’t wait for the next
four years.”
