LIVONIA, Mich. – Head volleyball coach Jerry Abraham announced
today that the MU program has signed Marie Martin, a 6-1 middle hitter,
to a letter of intent. Martin, who will join a program that has won 11 straight
conference titles, plans to enroll at Madonna in the fall and begin her
collegiate career with the 2008 season.
“Marie Martin is one of the area’s
top players and I think one of the state’s best middle hitters,” said Abraham.
“She fits into our mold of player and is an excellent volleyball athlete who comes from a
very supportive and sports orientated family.”
Martin (Canton,
Mich./Canton HS) earned four letters at Canton in volleyball and has added three
more in basketball. She was selected all-conference and was a team captain this
season. Last season she earned all-division and all-region honors. As a freshman,
she set the school record for blocks in a season. She is also a two-time team
captain for the basketball team, a role she will take on for the upcoming season. Martin is
also a member of the National Honor Society and the honor roll.
“Marie is a
student-athlete with a lot of upside. She has nice size, excellent speed with the ability to turn into a fierce
attacker and dominant player at the net, added Abraham. “She has had great
coaching at both the club and high school level. We are looking for her to come
in and compete for playing time early in her career. Once she adjusts to the speed of the game the sky is the limit for her.”
Madonna, which
wrapped up its 11th straight Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference
championship last week, hosts the 2007 WHAC Championship this weekend at Henry
Ford Community College in Dearborn.
