LIVONIA, Mich.
– Despite 15 kills from Lubovj Tihomirova in the opening match of the day and 18 more in the nightcap, the Madonna volleyball team dropped both of its matches on Saturday to close the Crusader Classic. Fourth-ranked Biola (Calif) was crowned the tournament champion after going 4-0, with Lee University (Tenn.) coming in second. The host Crusaders were third.

Biola came out in the first game and ran out to a 10-3 lead before slowly putting the game out of reach, closing the game on a 20-11 run to take game one 30-14. MU hit at a .171 clip compared to BU, which hit at a .514 pace.

Game two was the closest of the three, as MU hung with BU, as the match had 11 tie scores and saw four lead changes before the Eagles two sraight kills to take a 2-0 lead in the match with a 32-30 win.

The finale was once again all Biola as the Eagles kept Madonna to a -.023 hitting percentage and put down 17 kills in taking game three 30-17.

Tihomirova led the MU attack with 15 kills and Mary McGinnis added nine of her own in the losing effort.  Inta Grinvalds posted 26 assists, while Jacqui Gatt collected 14 digs.

In the second match of the day, the Crusaders took on the Lee University Flames and the match was much more tightly contested as each game was decided by just two points (30-28, 31-29, 30-28), but Madonna found itself on the wrong side of those scores and fell 3-0.

MU hit at just a .210 pace for the match, compared to an even .300 for LU. Tihomirova and McGinnis paced the attack with 18 kills each. Grinvalds handed out 50 assists, while Gatt posted 20 digs and was joined in double figures by Brynn Kerr and her 13.

The Crusaders close the WHAC season on Tuesday night at Indiana Tech before wrapping up the regular season on Thursday night at Warner Southern (Fla.).
