BOX SCORE
GRAND RAPIDS,
Mich.
– Junior outside hitters Whitney Fuelling and
Lubovj Tihomirova
combined for 25 kills to lead the
No. 18
Madonna volleyball team to its 10th straight win overall and fifth in
conference action in a 3-0 (30-19, 30-20, 30-19) downing of Davenport on
Thursday night.
Tihomirova once again led the way for MU, posting her 22nd straight double-digit
kill performance.
The Crusaders used timely
hitting in game one to take the opening game 30-19. Tihomirova led the visitors
with six kills, while Mary McGinnis added four of her own to go along with a
block assist.
Game two was much closer
that the final score appeared as Madonna jumped out to a 12-7 lead and extended
it to to 15-10 before DU called a time out. The break seemed to change the mood
of the Panthers as they rallied to cut the Crusader lead to just two at 18-16,
making a 6-3 run in the process.
That run forced MU boss
Jerry Abraham to call a time out of his own and the Royal and Gold responded,
going on a 12-4 run to close the game and give MU a 2-0 lead with the 30-20 win.
Tihomirova, the current NAIA National Player of the Week, once again led the way
with six kills while Fuelling posted one of her two solo blocks in game two.
Game three was all Madonna
as the Crusaders raced out to a 14-6 lead, which lead to another Panther time
out. That did little to stem the tide as MU continued the offense, hitting at a
.262 clip for the match and cruising in game three to a 30-19 win.
Fuelling hit at a .444 clip
for the match, putting down 10 balls, while only making two errors. McGinnis
added in eight kills of her own to hit at a .333 pace. Sophomore setter Inta
Grinvalds handed out 35 assists, while WHAC and Region VIII Libero of the Week
Jacqui Gatt posted a match high 20 digs and two service aces.
The Crusaders will find
themselves back in Grand Rapids the next time they take the court as the team
travels to Aquinas for a 7:00 pm match on Tuesday Oct. 2.
