LIVONIA,
MICH.
– It took four games, but
the Madonna volleyball team used 17 kills each from all-American Lubovj
Tihomirova and Whitney Fuelling to stay perfect in WHAC play with a 3-1 win over
visiting Concordia on Tuesday night at the Activities Center. The Crusaders held
the Cards to a .029 hitting percentage, while swinging at a .288 clip
themselves.
Concordia jumped
out to a 5-0 lead in the opening game of the match, forcing Madonna boss Jerry
Abraham to call a time out. The break didn’t phase the Cardinals as CU ran out
to a 12-2 lead before the Crusaders started cutting back into the lead and tying
the match at 20-20. The two sides battled back and forth, but the Cardinals used
three Crusader hitting errors and a Samantha Cuppen kill to seal the win at
30-28. Poor hitting doomed the Crusaders in game one, as the squad hit at a .064
percentage, including 13 errors.
In game two,
Madonna used four Fuelling kills to go along with three from Tihomirova and two
from freshman Liz Dempsey to take the game 30-18. Concordia kept the match close
in the early going, keeping Madonna in check until the Crusaders reeled off a
6-1 run to assert themselves and take the lead at 10-4. The Crusaders used a
pair of Dempsey kills and three from Fuelling down the stretch to ice the game
away and square the match at 1-1 with a 30-18 game two win.
Games three and
four were much like game two as strong hitting and timely defense kept Madonna
in the lead through out and gave MU the 3-1 come from behind win. Fuelling had
nine kills in the final two games and Mary McGinnis added five of her own to
propel Madonna to the win.
The Crusaders now
break from WHAC play to take part in the Palm Beach Atlantic Tournament Friday
and Saturday.
