SAN DIEGO,
CALF.
– It was a tale of
two matches as the seventh-ranked Madonna volleyball team split its two Friday
matches at the Seaside Invitational hosted by Point Loma. Madonna handled
Dominican (CA) in three games (30-12, 30-26, 30-16) to open the day, but fell in
the night cap 3-0 to the host Sea Lions (30-19, 30-22, 30-24). The Crusaders are
now 4-3 and take on Hope International Saturday at 4pm (EST).
DOMINICAN
Strong hitting and timely defense helped propel MU to a three-game win over
Dominican in the opening match of the Seaside Invite on Friday afternoon. The
Crusaders hit .450 for the match to just .205 for the Penguins.
In game
one, MU raced out to a 3-0 lead and never looked back, extending the lead to
17-10 before going on a run that made it 19-11 and brought Jacqui Gatt to the
service line. Gatt (right) then held serve, being helped by a pair of Whitney
Fuelling kills and an ace of her own to kick the lead up to 25-11 before the
Penguins could answer and make it 25-12.
Lubovj
Tihomirova then finished off four sets from Inta Grinvalds to put the game away
and give the Crusaders a 30-12 game one win.
Game two
was a much closer affair, with Madonna never holding a lead of more than five, but
steady play from Tihomirova, including a pair of aces, helped to salt away game
two for the Crusaders by a 30-26 final.
Game three
looked much like game one as Madonna once again never trailed and used six kills
from Tihomirova to go along with three each from Mary McGinnis and Martie Mazur to seal the
win 30-16.
Tihomirova
led the way with 17 kills and chipped in 11 digs while Fuelling added 11 kills
of her own. Gatt
led the way defensively with 13 digs and four service aces.
POINT LOMA
As good as Madonna looked against Dominican, it was not as sharp against the
host Point Loma Sea Lions, falling in three games (30-19, 30-22, 30-24). The hot
hitting that was everywhere for the Crusaders in match one was absent in the
night cap as Madonna hit just .080 and produced just 34 kills to a .370 hitting
percentage and 55 kills for Point Loma.
Tihomirova
was the only Madonna player to record double digit kills with 15. Gatt led the
way again with 16 digs. Grinvalds chipped in with 11 digs and 31 assists in a
losing effort.
Madonna
looks to get back on the winning track Saturday when it faces off with Hope
International at 4pm (EST).
