Cabrini High School senior Karie Altman (pictured) has signed a letter of intent to play for Madonna next fall.

LIVONIA, Mich. - - The 11-time defending Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference champion Madonna volleyball team added another piece to its 2008 puzzle today as head coach Jerry Abraham announced that Allen Park Cabrini standout Karie Altman has signed a letter of intent to continue her academic and athletic careers at Madonna starting this fall.

“Karie is a quality, all-around athlete,” commented Abraham after the signing. “Our staff has liked her from the first time we saw her. In the front row, she is a terminating type of attacker who can hit from antenna to antenna. She has the speed, agility and the court sense to hit out of the middle or come from the outside and attack as well. She plays the game like one of our past all-Americans, Caryn Inman.”

Altman (Taylor, Mich.), a 6-0 middle/outside hitter, has earned four letters on the volleyball court during her time with the Monarchs. This season she helped lead her squad to the Catholic High School League championship en route to being named all-Catholic, all-district, all-region, all-state and to the News Herald Downriver Dream Team for the third straight season.

The Taylor, Mich., native has also earned a trio of letters on the basketball court, helping Cabrini to another CHSL title this winter and to a state semi-finals appearance in the MHSAA tournament two weeks ago. Altman is also a standout on the softball diamond, helping CHS to back-to-back state championships and wrapping up the 2007 season with a perfect 35-0 record.

“Karie has a whip for an arm and plays with a great deal of intensity,” added Abraham. “In high school she was also a standout defensive back row player who never came out of the game. She is the kind of player who makes everyone around her better and we can not wait to start working with her this fall.”

Madonna – which captured its 11th straight Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference championship and made its sixth straight trip to the NAIA National Tournament this season – returns 12 letter winners from a squad that went 35-12 in 2007.
