LIVONIA,
Mich. –
Head volleyball coach Jerry Abraham announced his second signing for the
2008 season on Wednesday. Megan Fricke (Wyandotte, Mich.), a 5-9
outside hitter from Wyandotte Roosevelt High School will continue her academic
and athletic careers at Madonna starting this fall.
”Megan
is an excellent all-around volleyball player,” commented Abraham at the signing.
“She plays much bigger than her size and is a great leaper. Megan is a real
tenacious kind of a hitter who hits the ball with a lot of velocity.”
Fricke
earned four letters in volleyball for the Bears in addition to a pair on the
basketball court. As a junior she was named all-region and to the MEGA
Conference all-academic team after helping Roosevelt advance to the state
quarter finals for the first time in program history. As a senior, Fricke was
again named all-region in addition to picking up all-area, all-league and
all-academic selections. She was also selected to the all-state third team and
was named the News-Herald Tournament MVP in addition to being selected as
the publication’s “Athlete of the Week” in both volleyball and basketball. She
was selected to the all-Downriver team on the basketball court as a senior.
Off the
court, Fricke shined as well, earning honor roll status all four years as well
as being selected as a member of the National Honor Society.
“She is
also a tenacious kind of performer who plays every point to win,” added Abraham.
“We’ve seen Megan play in competitive matches in high school and she seemed to
bring her best when the game is on line. She has excellent back row skills and
can move sideline to sideline to go along with an outstanding offensive type
serve. We are looking forward to working with this outstanding student-athlete.”
Fricke,
who prepped at Roosevelt under Colleen Minor, comes from the same program that
produced two-time Crusader all-American Laura Lesko. She plans to study
psychology at Madonna. The Crusaders captured their 11th straight
Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference crown in 2007 and advances to the NAIA
National Championship for the sixth straight season.
