Inman Named WHAC Player of the Year

November 12, 2006

Caryn Inman was named WHAC Player of the Year and recently eclipsed the 2,000 kill plateau while leading MU to their third straight conference tournament championship.

LIVONIA, Mich. -- Senior Caryn Inman (Oxford, Mich./Oxford HS) became the eighth Madonna volleyball player to earn Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Player of the Year after the league office announced the awards on Saturday following the Crusaders third straight conference tournament championship.

During her 34-kill performance in the conference championship game, Inman became only the sixth player in Madonna history to surpass 2,000 career kills.

Inman was joined on the all-conference teams by six other MU players, including setter Inta Grinvalds (Portage, Mich./Portage Central HS) who was named Freshman of the Year.  Grinvalds led the conference in assists in her first collegiate season and earned conference setter of the week honors five times during the year.

Senior middle hitter
Heather Spooner (Woodhaven, Mich./Woodhaven HS), junior libero Jacqui Gatt (Livonia, Mich./Churchill HS) and sophomore outside hitter Lubovj Tihomirova (Riga, Latvia/Rigas Gymnasia HS) were also selected as members of the first team.

Sophomore outside hitter Whitney Fuelling (Milford, Mich./Milford HS) earned a spot on the second team in her first season of college volleyball.

Junior defensive specialist
Amy Szymanski (Redford, Mich./Ladywood HS) was one of six players named to the conference Champions of Character team.

Szymanski, Gatt, Inman and Spooner were also honored as members of the All-Academic team.  Earlier in the week, Inman was also named ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District third team by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

The seventh-ranked Crusaders are one of six teams participating at the NAIA Region VIII volleyball tournament beginning Friday, Nov. 17 at Indiana Wesleyan University.
