LIVONIA, Mich. --
League leading Madonna swept Siena
Heights, 3-0, by scores of 30-19, 30-16 and 30-21 on Thursday night in
the Activities Center.
With the victory, Madonna (27-2) head coach
Jerry Abraham moved into second place all-time in NAIA
coaching wins with 798. Abraham needs just two more wins to become
the second NAIA coach to ever reach the 800 wins plateau.
Sophomore
outside hitter
Lubovj Tihomirova (Riga, Latvia/Rigas Gymnasia HS)
again led the Crusaders offensive charge with 18 kills in 34 attempts
with a game high .500 hitting percentage.
Senior middle hitter
Caryn Inman
(Oxford, Mich./Oxford HS) also recorded double digit kills with
12 on the night to go along with four digs and three block assists.
Freshmen setters
Natalie Niblock
(White Pigeon, Mich./White Pigeon HS) and
Inta Grinvalds
(Portage, Mich./Portage Central HS) guided the Crusaders offense
to a .308 hitting percentage while each posted 18 assists.
Sophomore
Whitney Fuelling
(Milford, Mich./Milford HS) led the Crusaders defensive effort
with nine digs while adding nine kills as well.
In the first game, Madonna jumped out to a 10-3 lead before Siena
Heights (7-17) called their first time out. The Crusaders would
run their lead to as much as 11 points during the game before cruising
to a 30-19 game one victory.
In game two, Madonna again set the tempo with a 6-1 advantage. The
Crusaders would extend the lead to 14-5 before the Saints again were
forced into a time out. Behind junior
Jacqui Gatt's
(Livonia, Mich./Churchill HS) serving, the Crusader would lengthen
their lead to as much as 14 points before claiming game two, 30-16.
After the Crusaders again jumped out to a big lead, 12-4, Siena Heights
finally mounted an offensive charge, tying the game twice down the
stretch. After the Saints knotted the game, 19-19, Madonna would
reel off a 11-2 run to close out the match, 30-21.
The
Crusaders will turn around and host Concordia on Friday, Oct. 13 in the
Activities Center at 7:00 p.m. (ET).
