Eight different Crusaders tallied kills as the Madonna volleyball team
defeated Spring Arbor, 3-0 (30-14, 30-25, 30-28)
to move to 14-2 on the season. The win marked the Crusaders’ 13th sweep
in 16 matches this year.
Senior middle hitter
Caryn Inman
(Oxford, MI/Oxford HS) paced Madonna with a 16 kills in 31
attempts and four total blocks. Senior rightside hitter
Heather Spooner
(Woodhaven, MI/Woodhaven HS) added eight kills in 17 chances for
the Crusaders.
Freshman setter
Inta Grinvalds
(Portage, MI/Portage Central HS) posted a game high 39 assists
and averaged 13 assists per game while pacing the Crusaders to a .189
hitting percentage.
Defensively, the Crusaders recorded 12 team
blocks and junior libero
Jacqui Gatt
(Livonia, MI/Churchill HS) collected 20 digs.
In game one, Spring Arbor held an early
3-1 advantage before MU went on a 14-2 run and claiming a 17-3 lead.
The Crusader would go on to win game one 30-14.
The second game of the night featured a
back-and-forth battle with the game tied 10-10 before Gatt served four
straight points for the Crusaders. The game would remain close with MU
holding a 24-23 lead before Gatt sparked another Madonna run giving the
Crusaders a 30-25 win.
Game three was the most competitive of
the night with Spring Arbor jumping out to a 4-1 advantage before
Madonna tied the game at 5-5 after a kill by
Lubovj Tihomirova
(Riga, Latvia/Rigas Gymnasia HS). The Cougars would not back
down, and stretched out to a 16-10 lead before Madonna came storming
back. The Crusaders would regain the lead 26-25 and received another
big kill from Tihomirova. Spring Arbor would again fight back to knot
the game 28-28, but Madonna won the next two points and claimed a 30-28
win in game three after a block by

(Highland, MI/Milford HS).
Madonna defeated Spring Arbor for the second time
this season after winning 3-0 against the Cougars on August 25 at the
UM-Dearborn Early Bird Invitational.
No. 8 Madonna returns to Wolverine-Hoosier
Athletic Conference play on Tuesday (Sept. 20) in a road contest at
Concordia, starting at 7 p.m.
