Early Bird Day One Recap

Dearborn, Mich. -- The Madonna volleyball team swept #21 Doane (Neb.) College by scores of 30-18, 33-31 and 30-22 on Saturday afternoon to win the UM-Dearborn Early Bird Tournament championship after posting a 4-0 record.

Madonna advanced to the championship game after a 3-0 win over Mt. Vernon Nazarene by scores of 30-15, 30-18 and 30-27 earlier on Saturday.  The fifth-ranked Crusaders won two pool play matches on Friday before advancing on to Saturday's championship bracket.  Madonna defeated Spring Arbor and Tiffin both 3-0 in pool play.

Senior middle hitter
Caryn Inman (Oxford, MI/Oxford HS) and junior libero Jacqui Gatt (Livonia, MI/Churchill HS) were named to the all-tournament team for their individual performances.  Inman posted 17 kills and four block assists in the championship game.  Gatt recorded a team high 21 digs and led the Crusaders defensive effort in each match of the tournament.

Freshman setter
Inta Grinvalds (Portage, MI/Portage Central HS) gained more confidence in her first collegiate season after recording 39 assists and six block assists in the Crusaders win over Doane.  Grinvalds posted a season high 45 assists on Friday night against Tiffin during the pool play round of the tournament.

Lubovj Tihomirova (Rigas, Latvia/Rigas Classic HS) led the offensive charge for the Crusaders over Spring Arbor in the first match of the tournament with 15 kills.  Tihomirova improved her kills totals against Tiffin in Friday's nightcap by posting 18 kills.

The early morning match up on Saturday between Madonna and Mt. Vernon Nazarene featured the top two winningest active head coaches in the NAIA.  Madonna head coach Jerry Abraham recorded win number 775 (20 years) following the Crusaders win over the Cougars and later number 776 against Doane.  MVNU head coach Paul Swanson picked up his 782nd win (23 years) in pool play on Friday before falling to Madonna in the semifinals.

The Crusaders improved to 5-0 overall and will travel to Great Falls, Montana this week and take part in the University of Great Falls Tournament beginning on Friday (Sept. 1) at 3:00 p.m. (ET) against tournament host, the University of Great Falls.
