LIVONIA, Mich. --
The most
successful season in Madonna volleyball history was put to bed today
(February 12, 2006) as the team laughed, cried and cheered for one final
time at their annual awards banquet.
Madonna senior setter Ashley Frost
(right) was named Miss Volleyball for 2006, the top honor the program
bestows. The award was the capper in a stellar career for Frost who goes
down as the program's assist leader and was named WHAC and NAIA Regional
Setter-of-the-Year as well as a NAIA first team All-American.
Frost was
part of a four member senior class who go down in history as one of the most
prolific in team history. Frost, Natalja Tinina, Laura Lesko and Stefanie
DeNardin each took the podium and gave humorous and tearful farewell
speaches. The most poinent moment of the night came from Frost, who's
tearful farewell included a wish that Coach Abraham could realize his dream.
"We wanted
so badly to win the National Championship for you," Frost said. "There is
nobody more deserving of a banner hanging in that gym, and we wanted to give
that to you."
Frost was
just one of many players honored on the night as a total of 14 team awards
were handed out. In addition to her Miss Volleyball award, Frost also
collected co-MVP honors with Tinina.
"In my
opinion, there weren't two better players in the country at their
positions," Abraham told the crowd of over 100. "Either one could have
easily been National Player of the Year. Natalja was the National runner-up,
but both were instrumental to our great success."
Kelsey Mack,
the WHAC and Regional Freshman-of-the-Year also took home the team award by
the same name.
Junior Becci
Crane and freshman Stephanie were each presented with the Coaches Award for
their hard work and enthusiasm throughout the season.
Sophomore
Jacqui Gatt, who lead the team with 82 service aces was named the team's
Server-of-the-Year and also took home the Sister Marcy Franceline Award for
academic and athletic excellence.
Senior Laura
Lesko was named the Comeback Player-of-the-Year after returning from a
injury-missed 2004 campaign to garner first team All-WHAC, All-Region and
second team All-America honors.
Senior
libero Stefanie DeNardin earned Defensive Player-of-the-Year accolades after
pacing the team in digs on her way to All-Conference accolades.
Tinina was
also named the Offensive Player-of-the-Year after becoming the programs
career kills leader this season and leading the nation in total kills.
Tinina wasn't done there, also taking home the President's Award for
Academic Achievement.
The Julie
Martin Sportsmanship Award was given to Amy Szymanski, who was cited for her
unbridled support and enthusiasm for her program and teammates, a character
trait representative of the awards namesake, the late Julie Martin.
Constant
cohorts Heather Spooner and Caryn Inman capped the night by receiving the
Leadership Award and Raymond J. Summers Academic/Athletic Excellence awards
respectively. Spooner was also honored for being the teams NAIA Champion of
Character representative and as a member of the WHAC Champions of Character
team.
