LIVONIA, Mich..
-- The Madonna University softball team added their third recruit
for the 2008 season, signing prep catcher Ashley Shay
(Dearborn, Mich./Divine Child HS) to a letter of intent
Wednesday morning.
Shay is
coming off a junior season that saw her hit .380 with two home runs
and 34 RBI's for the Falcons. Shay was named All-City,
All-League, All-District, All-Region, All-Catholic and honorable
mention All-State as a junior.
"We are
extremely excited to add Ashley to our Madonna family," stated MU
head coach Al White. "We have followed her career at Divine
Child and know exactly what she will bring to the table as a
Crusader."
If her
collegiate career mirrors her time as a prep, Shay is in for a slew
of honors. As a freshman, she earned All-City, All-District,
All-League and honorable mention All-Region honors after hitting
.294.
Her
offensive output increased as a sophomore, hitting .364 with 21
RBI's on her way to repeat honors in each category.
The
daughter of Alan Shay, Ashley follows the path from Divine Child to
the collegiate ranks set by her older brother Ryan, a standout
shortstop at Bowling Green State University.
"I want
to thank my family, my coaches and everyone at Madonna for making
this possible," Shay said to a crowd of over 50 assembled at Divine
Child. "I am really looking forward to doing great things for
coach White starting next season."
Shay, who
also excels on the volleyball court for the Falcons, is a National
Honor Society member with perfect attendance and plans to study
Nursing when she officially enrolls at Madonna in August.
Shay
becomes the third player to sign with the Crusaders for the 2008
season, joining
Tara LaMilza
(St. Clair Shores, Mich./Regina HS) and
Kelly Lesko (Trenton, Mich./Trenton HS).
Last season, Madonna
completed its season with a 35-15 overall record and a 10-9 mark in the
Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference. The Crusaders finished third overall in
the final conference standings and appeared in the NAIA Region VIII
tournament
championship game.
The Crusaders
are off to a 13-6 start to the 2007 season.
