Softball Adds Carleton Airport Star for 2006

Dec. 28, 2004

LIVONIA, MI. - Madonna University softball coach Al White announced the signing of Allison Grant (Carleton, MI/Carleton Airport) to a letter of intent to play for the Crusaders in 2006.  The standout catcher becomes the second player from the class of 2005 to sign with Madonna, joining Chelsea high school senior Mary Setta.

Grant was a rock at catcher last season, hitting .482 with a .786 slugging percentage. She had 16 doubles, 6 triples, 2 home runs and 34 RBI

The daughter of Rick and Heidi Grant of Carleton began playing T-ball at age 4. She has been a catcher since the sixth grade. "I love it," she said. "You're in on every play and I like the contact."

Her greatest softball thrills include getting out of a bases-loaded, no-out situation against Jefferson and singling in the winning run against Canton at the Madonna Tournament when the international tiebreaker rule had been instituted. Madonna coaches were scouting her at that tournament.

"Madonna reminds me a lot of Airport as far as size," Grant said. "I looked at a couple other schools, but I didn't really consider anywhere else. Madonna was a godsend. It's close to home and it's a perfect fit. I couldn't go anywhere else."

Coach White echo's Grants statements and thinks she is a perfect addition to the Crusader lineup for 2006.

"Allison is an excellent defensive and offensive catcher," commented White.  "At our level we need some pop behind the plate to continue our success and we believe Allison can provide that and more."

The Crusaders went 38-17-2 last season and won their first Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference title under White.

Grant joins Chelsea high school pitcher Mary Setta in the class of senior signing by White and his staff.
