Softball Trio Signs with Madonna

L-R: Caitlyn Sidor, Alyssa Bertrand and Bridget Hughes

LIVONIA, Mich. -- Madonna University softball coach Al White announced today the signing of three student-athletes to letters of intent.

Caitlyn Sidor (Livonia, MI/Churchill HS), Bridget Hughes (Northville, MI/Northville HS) and Alyssa Bertrand (Goodrich, MI/Goodrich) became Crusaders today and will continue their academic and athletic careers this fall at MU.

"We are very excited about the addition of these three players," commented White.  "This is the start to what we believe will be one of our best classes in recent memory."

Hughes comes to Madonna from nearby Northville High where she earned seven letters as a prep, four in women's hockey and three in softball.  A second baseman, Hughes was a All-League honoree and Wendy's High School Heisman nominee as a senior.

"Bridget is a very intense player who fills a need for us at second base due to graduation'" said White.  "Hopefully she can step right in and contribute for us."

Sidor will make the short trip to Madonna from Livonia Churchill High where earned four varsity letters in softball.  Sidor helped lead Churchill to a pair of division championships and a conference title as a senior.  As a junior, Sidor hit .541 while helping Churchill to city, division, district and regional titles.

"Cat is probably the best defensive first baseman coming out of the high school level that I have seen in a long time," White said. "She is very smooth, very polished and we count on her moving right in and being a contributor.  She also swings a good bat with good power, but like any other hitter making the transition to college we will work with her to progress and constantly improve herself."

Playing first base for the Chargers, Sidor was a career .445 hitter and hopes to study Education at MU.

Bertrand comes to MU from Goodrich, Michigan where she has led her squad to a 2006 regional appearance beginning Saturday.

"Alyssa is a catcher by trade, she is very good receiver and another player that comes from a great program," White stated.  "She's had great summer ball experience and she is a very intelligent player...she knows the game very well and that will help her transition."

Bertrand has earned seven varsity letters as a prep, including three on the diamond and four in volleyball.  As a sophomore, she led Goodrich to the regional and district championships while earning All-District and All-Region honors at first base.  Moving to catcher as a junior, she piled up numbers leading to a first team All-League selection after an undefeated league championship season.

The trio are phase one of what White hopes will be a total of six to eight recruits for the 2006 team.

"We are bringing in the type of student-athlete that can carry on the tradition of academic and athletic excellence we have established here at Madonna," White says.  "It is important for us to continue building on the successes we have had recently in our ultimate goal of a national title."

White's recruits will join a Madonna program that posted a 35-15 record in 2005 that included a trip to the NAIA Regional championship game.
