--
It took nearly three hours and 13
innings, but Madonna moved to 27-4, 7-2 in WHAC play with a 2-1 victory over
visiting Concordia University Thursday at Madonna University Field.
The game quickly
turned into a classic pitchers duel as MU's Erin Brockert and Concordia's Auna
Shaffer each went the distance for their respective teams.
Concordia got on
the board first, scoring a run in the third on a RBI single by Melinda Pruess to
take a 1-0 lead.
Madonna answered in
the sixth when Heather Richardson connected on her sixth home run of the season,
a solo shot to left, knotting the score 1-1.
That would be all
the offense over the next six innings as Brockert and Shaffer worked their way
out of jams including a bases loaded no-out situation for Shaffer in the 10th.
Finally in the
13th, Madonna got back on the board. Stephanie Day led off the inning with
a single to center and was pinch-run for. JC Czarnecki then sacrificed Sarah
Zimmer to second. Zimmer moved to third on a ground out by Crystal Little.
Up to the plate stepped freshman Mary Kate Setta, who delivered the game winning
RBI single to right, for the 2-1 victory.
Brockert picked up
the win, moving to 16-3 on the season, throwing all 13 innings while scattering
eight hits and striking out 10.
Shaffer took the
hard luck loss, falling to 4-11.
Game two was
suspended after 3 scoreless innings and will be resumed at a later date if
necessary.
