Crusaders and Saints Split in Sunday Showdown

Box Score Game 1 | Box Score Game 2

LIVONIA -- Madonna and Aquinas had established themselves as the teams to beat in the WHAC heading into Sunday's action, and not much changed after a split of games at Madonna University Field.  The Crusaders took game one 2-1 while Aquinas won the nightcap 6-2.

In game one, the story was stellar pitching.  Madonna's Erin Brockert and Aquinas' Tarin Foster threw zero's on the board through four innings before Madonna got to the Saints in the fifth.  Crystal Little provided a one out triple and scored on a wild pitch, giving the Crusaders a 1-0 lead.

Aquinas answered in the sixth on a triple by McCall Kleinfelt who scored on a single by Casey Schweitzer to tie the game, 1-1.

The Crusaders stormed right back, scoring the go-ahead run in their half of the sixth on a RBI double by Brockert which scored Stacey Sexsmith.

It would prove to be the game winner as Brockert retired the Saints in order in the seventh to pick run her record to 15-2.

Foster took the loss moving to 8-2 on the season.

In the nightcap Aquinas was the first one's on the board scoring twice in the second off MU starter Liz Ballinger to take a 2-0 lead.

The Crusaders answered with a run in the third as Brockert lined a single through the right side, scoring Sexsmith and cutting the lead to 2-1.

The Saints got to Ballinger again the the fourth putting runners on second and third with one out when coach Al White brought Brockert in for relief.  Brockert got the first batter she faced to fly out, but then surrendered a two run single to Kleinfelt putting the Saints up 4-1.

MU struck back with a run in their half of the fourth when Little led off with a double and scored on a double down the line by Danielle Richardson.

But that would be all the offense Madonna would muster, falling short of a comeback after Aquinas scored two insurance runs in the seventh for a 6-2 victory.

With the split, Madonna goes to 25-3 overall, 6-2 in conference play.  Aquinas moves to 18-6, 5-1 in WHAC action.

The Crusaders are back in action Tuesday when they travel to Northwood for a 4:00 pm double header.
