LIVONIA
-- The Madonna softball team
had it clicking on all cylinders Thursday, getting stellar pitching and playing
long ball at the plate on their way to a pair of victories over Rochester
College, 14-0 and 4-1.
In game one, a combination of
the Madonna offense and Erin Brockert's mound dominance was too much for
the visiting Warriors in a 14-0 (5 inn.) run-rule shortened affair. Brockert
threw all five innings, in perfect fashion, retiring all 15 batters she faced on
the way to her first career perfect game.
The
Crusader offense came out on fire, scoring twice in the first inning and five
times each in the second and third. Heather Richardson’s first career
grand slam was the big blow in the second and Stephanie Day added a grand
slam of her own in the third.
The
Crusaders added their final two runs in the fifth on a RBI doubles by
Kathleen Smiley and Brockert.
The
victory improved MU to 16-1 on the year while Brockert went to 11-1 on the
mound.
In game
two, the Crusaders got on the board in the second via a solo homer from first
baseman Allison Grant, her third of the season, taking a 1-0 lead.
Rochester stuck back in the third, tying the game on a solo blast by catcher
Nichole Chiles.
MU
regained the lead, 2-1, in the fourth on a RBI double to right by Mary Kate
Setta then added two more in the fifth courtesy of a mammoth two-run homer
to left by Brockert, running their lead to 4-1.
That
would be all starting pitcher Shannon Noder would need on her way to a
career high 15 strikeouts and her first win of the season.
Madonna
improves to 17-1 on the season while Rochester falls to 1-7.
The
Crusaders are back in action Friday when they face Shawnee State University in a
1:00 pm double-header at Madonna University Field.
