LIVONIA,
Mich. - -
The Madonna
softball team swept its Saturday twin bill with visiting Concordia
by finals of 6-0 and 7-0. The Cardinals forfeited game two due to
lack of healthy players and by rule, the Crusaders win 7-0. The wins
move Madonna to 20-10-1 and 8-2 in the WHAC. Concordia is 0-16
overall and 0-12 in loop action.
GAME
ONE
The Crusaders struck early and often in
game one of the day, plating two runs in the first inning before adding single
runs in the second, third, fifth and sixth for the 6-0 final.
In the bottom of the
first, Brittney Scero (Canton, Mich.) reached after the third
strike was dropped by the CU catcher. Cat Sidor (Livonia, Mich.)
was then hit by a pitch to put runners at first and second with no outs.
Following a MU strike out,
Christina Finch (Albion, Mich.) roped a one-out single to right to
score Scero and give the home side a 1-0 lead. Sidor came home on a Danielle
Richardson (Flint, Mich.) single to make it 2-0 Madonna.
In the second, the
Crusaders added another run as Sidor singled to right and was followed by a
single off the bat of Tedi Johnston (New Boston, MIch.). That
brought Tara LaMilza (St. Clair Shores, Mich.) to the plate and
the freshman delivered a single to center to score Sidor and make it 3-0.
MU pushed the lead to 4-0
in the third as Kathleen Smiley (Wixom, Mich.) laid down a one-out
bunt single. Kelly Lesko (Trenton, Mich.) then singled to right
field to put runners at the corners. Head coach Al White then pulled off
the double steal, allowing Smiley to come home while Lesko got a run-down
started to allow Smiley to score and in the end, Lesko to be safe at second.
It became 5-0 in the fifth
as Smiley led off with a single and Lesko tripled her home. MU plated its sixth
run in the sixth as LaMilza was hit by a pitch to open the inning and then came
around to score on an Ashley Shay (Garden City, Mich.) double to
center to make it 6-0.
Jess Irwin
(Monroe, Mich.) had to work out of a couple of jams during her complete game
effort, but the Cards could only get one runner past second base all day as
Irwin scattered six hits and did not issue a walk while striking out eight for
her 10th win of the season against just four losses.
GAME TWO
The Cardinals could not field enough
healthy bodies to play the back end of the double header and were forced to
forfeit. The game goes into the books as a 7-0 win for Madonna.
The Crusaders get back into action tomorrow
with a key WHAC double header at Indiana Tech. MU and IIT split on Friday and
are tied for second, pending the outcome of Saturday's Tech/Michigan-Dearborn
double header in Dearborn.
