ADRIAN, Mich. - -
The
Madonna softball team extended its winning streak to three games
with a sweep of Siena Heights in Adrian on Thursday. MU took game
one 6-0 and then wrapped up the sweep with a 15-4 run-rule win in
the night cap. The wins improved Madonna to 13-9-1 overall and 3-1
in WHAC action.
GAME ONE
Neither side could push a run across the
plate until the Madonna half of the fourth when Mary Kate Setta (Grass
Lake, Mich.) reached on a
walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Kelly Lesko (Trenton,
Mich.). Another walk to
Kathleen Smiley put runners at first and second with one out. Brittney Scero
(Canton, Mich.) then broke the scoreless tie with a single to plate Setta for a 1-0 lead.
Cat Sidor (Livonia, Mich.) then hit a single of her own to plate Smiley for a 2-0 lead for the
visiting side.
The Crusaders plated
another run in the fifth as Christina Finch (Homer, Mich.) reached on an error and then stole
third. A single by Ashley Shay (Garden City, Mich.) scored Finch from third to extend the Madonna
lead to 3-0.
MU tacked on three more
runs in the sixth to put the game away. The runs were more than enough for Jess
Irwin (Monroe, Mich.) who allowed just one hit while striking out 12 Saints to pick up her fifth
win of the season. Sidor posted two hits in the win.
GAME TWO
The hot hitting by Madonna continued in
the night cap as the Crusaders plated 15 runs en route to a 15-4 run-rule win in
six innings.
After giving up a run to
the Saints in the third, the MU bats came back in a big way with 11 runs
in the fourth using eight hits and three SHU errors to take a huge lead. Three
straight singles to open the inning got the Crusaders square at 1-1. MU then
went on to plate 10 more runs and blow the game wide open.
SHU scored another run in
their half of the fourth, making it 11-2 after after four complete. The Madonna
bats were not done scoring yet as the royal and gold added four more runs in the
top of the fifth to make it 15-2. SHU mustered two more tallies in the bottom of
the fifth, but it was too little too late as Madonna's Liz Ballinger
(St. John's, Mich.) shut down
the SHU rally for her sixth win of the season.
MU scored its 15 runs with
the benefit of just one extra base hit, a double by Shay. Ballinger allowed four
runs on four hits for her win. Tedi Johnston (New Boston, Mich.) led the way with three hits, while Sidor,
Finch, Shay and Danielle Richardson (Flint, Mich.) each posted a pair of knocks.
The Crusaders will open
the home season on Friday with a WHAC double header with Cornerstone. First
pitch at University Field is slated for 4pm.
