GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- The Madonna softball team was swept in a league doubleheader for the first time this season after Cornerstone won game one 6-2 and then claimed the nightcap 4-2.

Cornerstone improved to 16-18 overall and 9-9 in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference.  Madonna dropped to 27-14 overall and 12-6 in league play.

The Golden Eagles had a long day at the ballpark, playing a doubleheader at Aquinas before returning to their home field to host the Crusaders.

In game one, Madonna had a 2-0 advantage after three innings of play as Brittney Scero (Canton, Mich./Canton HS) scored in the first inning and Tedi Johnston (New Boston, Mich./Huron HS) hit a solo homer in the third.

Cornerstone tied the game up after scoring a single run in the fifth and plated the tying run in the sixth inning off MU starter Shannon Noder (Lincoln Park, Mich./Lincoln Park HS).

The Golden Eagles finished off Madonna in the seventh inning as Jessica Dood hit a walk-off two-run homer to give CU a 4-2 win.

In the nightcap, Madonna led 1-0 in the second after Alison Grant (Carleton, Mich./Airport HS) hit a solo home run.  Cornerstone then erupted for four runs in the third inning to take a 4-1 lead.

The Golden Eagles tacked on a pair of insurance runs off MU starter Liz Ballinger (St. Johns, Mich./St. Johns HS) in the fifth inning to take a 6-1 advantage.

MU was able to push across a single run in the sixth inning, but their comeback bid fell short as Cornerstone claimed the sweep.

Madonna will finish up league play Sunday at Indiana Tech.  The doubleheader in Fort Wayne is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. ET
