Behind an 20-hit
attack, the Madonna softball squad swept a
doubleheader from Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference
opponent Concordia on Friday
afternoon with a five-inning
20-0 victory in the opener and an
18-0 win in the nightcap.
The Crusaders move to 27-12
overall and to 12-4 in WHAC
action with the sweep. Concordia drops to
5-33 overall and to 0-18 in
the league. With four
conference games to play, Madonna has moved into a first place tie with Aquinas.
Leading the offense for Madonna was
junior Heather Richardson (Plymouth,
Mich./Canton HS) who went three-for-four
with a team-high seven runs scored in the twinbill.
Richardson also drew three
walks and drove in five runs on the day.
MU freshman
Brittney Scero (Canton, Mich./Canton HS)
added four hits, five runs and three RBIs in the
doubleheader. Freshman
Caitlyn Sidor
(Livonia, Mich./Churchill HS)
recorded four hits as well, along with five RBIs.
Overall in the doubleheader, Cardinal pitchers surrendered 26 bases on balls.
Senior left-hander Shannon Noder (Lincoln
Park, Mich./Lincoln Park HS) cruised throughout the first game to pick up
her team leading 14th win of the season. Noder allowed just four hits and
struck out four.
Madonna scored in every inning of the first contest. The Crusaders opened
the contest with a pair of runs in the first inning and then posted six runs in
both the second and third innings.
MU scored four more runs in the fourth inning and capped off the game with a
pair of runs in the fifth before wrapping up the opener.
Sophomore Mary Kate Setta (Chelsea,
Mich./Chelsea HS) scored a pair of runs after drawing two walks in game one.
In the nightcap, Madonna scored three runs in the first inning and two in the
second before exploding in the fourth and fifth innings with six and seven runs,
respectively.
The Cardinals were able to keep Madonna off the scoreboard in the fifth inning
for the only time in the doubleheader.
Junior southpaw Liz Ballinger (St. Johns,
Mich./St. Johns HS) picked up her 13th win of the year after limiting the
host Cardinals to just four hits, while striking out five batters.
Sophomore Ashley Bonsall (Livonia,
Mich./Franklin HS) went 1-for-1 in the nightcap a triple that scored all
three runners on base.
Madonna has had a slight change in their plans this weekend. The Crusaders
will travel to Cornerstone for a make-up doubleheader at 3:30 p.m.
Madonna's originally scheduled non-conference doubleheader at Huntington has
been canceled to accommodate the conference schedule.
Cornerstone will be playing four league games on Saturday. The Golden
Eagles will host cross-town rival Aquinas at 11:00 a.m. before hosting the
Crusaders to finish out the day.
