GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- The Madonna softball team salvaged a split at league leading Aquinas Thursday afternoon.

The Saints (19-13-1, 9-2-1 WHAC) rolled over the Crusaders (20-11, 7-3 WHAC) in six innings to win the opener.  Madonna stormed back in the nightcap, using a
Heather Richardson (Plymouth, Mich./Canton HS) home run to claim a split with a 7-4 decision.

In the second game of the day, Madonna jumped out to a 4-0 lead over the defending conference champs, capped off by a third inning home run off the bat of
Caitlyn Sidor (Livonia, Mich./Churchill HS)

However, the Saints scored a run in the bottom of the fourth inning and pushed across three more in the bottom of the sixth to knot the game at 4-4.

Richardson led off the seventh inning with a solo homer to centerfield to give the Crusaders a one-run lead (5-4).

MU would add two more runs as
Danielle Richardson (Lapeer, Mich./Lapeer West HS) singled home Rachael Kethe (Richmond, Mich./Richmond HS) and Richardson later scored on an RBI single by Mary Kate Setta (Chelsea, Mich./Chelsea HS) to give the Crusaders a 7-4 lead.

Liz Ballinger (St. Johns, Mich./St. Johns HS) picked up the win in the circle for Madonna after pitching all seven innings and allowing four runs on 10 hits and striking out four.

Alison Grant (Carleton, Mich./Airport HS) led the Crusaders at the plate in game two with a 3-for-3 performance and an RBI.

In the opening game of the doubleheader, both teams scored two runs in the first inning, but Aquinas went on to score the next eight runs of the contest to end the game in the sixth inning due to the eight-run rule.

Shannon Noder (Lincoln Park, Mich./Lincoln Park HS) was saddled with the loss for Madonna after surrendering 10 runs, six of which were earned, on 12 hits, striking out four and walking three.

Aquinas' Alyssa Fleser earned the win after holding Madonna to just two runs on four hits.

The Crusaders return to action Friday, April 20 at Madonna University Field in a non-conference doubleheader against Rochester College.  The doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m.
